Baltimore Technology Park Announces Major Build-Out to Meet Increasing Demand

Recently launched data center expands capacity by 300%, augments security, bandwidth and power, adds City’s first-ever 24x7 manned on-site data center

BALTIMORE, MD – Baltimore Technology Park (BTP), a premier data center and the largest carrier-neutral facility in the state of Maryland, today announced that it will increase its capacity by 300%, augment its bandwidth and security, double its power supply and introduce Baltimore’s first-ever 24x7 manned Network Operations Center (NOC).  Only six months after opening, the build-out of additional space is already needed to meet high market demand from area businesses for secure and reliable data center services.

Scheduled to begin construction in October, BTP’s expansion will boast a fully modern power design replete with state-of-the-art, highly efficient, mechanical and electrical systems delivering redundant power, and HVAC cooling systems.  An important element in this will be the addition of a second generator, offering seamless continuation of power in the event of an outage.  This scaling and sizing of BTP’s power supply is paramount because data centers built several years ago are based on lower power designs, which frequently frustrate businesses when they try to expand or scale their equipment.

In addition, BTP will unveil Baltimore’s first manned Network Operations Center, offering customers a facility staffed 24x7 on-site by a fully certified Systems Administrator, who will be available to assist remote clients with any technical support issues.  BTP’s on-site personnel will also monitor the facility’s entire infrastructure around-the-clock.

The 11,000 square foot build-out will create capacity for an additional 250 server cabinets and plenty of space for cages and suites.  Six thousand square feet will consist of raised flooring available for colocation.  The remaining 5,000 square feet will be designed for employee and client workspace, kitchen, break and conference rooms.  As part of this expansion project, BTP will also increase its available bandwidth on the network.

Security at BTP will be enhanced via the addition of several new security cameras, and the construction of a secure, gated parking area.  Accessible by card swipe only, the parking area will afford clients safe access to BTP at any hour, and be monitored via video camera by on-site BTP staff.  During the build-out, shared tenant spaces will also be developed to provide clients with workspace and private offices, available on-demand or for leasing.  And finally, by request, BTP will build specialized caging and customized private suites with wall thicknesses to meet client specifications, which is especially attractive to financial service, defense and government-related firms.  BTP plans to hire more technical and sales staff to support an expanded client base and additional services.

“It’s clear that Baltimore and Washington, D.C.-based organizations have been waiting for a data center like BTP with the capacity, modern power design, security and the key services they need to safeguard their data and operations,” said Jeana Chaffin, director of product marketing for BTP.

The call for BTP’s services has been particularly strong from technology service companies seeking to expand their security-based managed services, and support the mission-critical applications they host for financial services firms, government agencies and online educational systems.

In addition to safeguarding the data and operations of the region’s businesses, BTP's location in a Focus Area of an Enterprise Zone allows it to offer customers significant tax incentives, including a ten-year, 80% credit against local personal property taxes.  Companies also receive the maximum degree of choice and flexibility in choosing their bandwidth provider, because unlike many other colocation options, BTP is a carrier-neutral facility.
