Prominent Mid-Atlantic Developer Turns to Baltimore Technology Park for Disaster Recovery Planning

- The Bozzuto Group Makes Secure Regional Data Center Centerpiece to Enable 24/7
Business Continuity and to Protect Core IT Systems -

BALTIMORE, MD – Baltimore Technology Park (BTP), a premier data center and the largest carrier-neutral facility in the state of Maryland, today announced that The Bozzuto Group has named BTP its data center partner for disaster recovery.  Headquartered in Greenbelt, Maryland, The Bozzuto Group is an award-winning real estate services firm consisting of six companies.  Employing nearly 1,000 people, the organization has developed, acquired and built more than 30,000 homes and apartments throughout the greater Mid-Atlantic region.

The Bozzuto Group’s numerous offices run their IT systems 24-hours a day and replicate daily with the firm’s main infrastructure at its headquarters.  Any disruption of access to its data or core systems would have dire consequences for the company’s business.  Thus, The Bozzuto Group turned to BTP for data redundancy, to ensure the uptime of its network and to house its critical infrastructure in a secure off-site location.

The Bozzuto Group sought a data center that was located far enough away from its headquarters to be safe in the event of a natural disaster or terrorist strike, but close enough so its IT team can easily access its colocated equipment without wasting valuable time flying to other parts of the country.  It also wanted a knowledgeable staff it could turn to for strategic advice or technical troubleshooting, as well as dependable customer service.  Finally, The Bozzuto Group needed a partner that understands the business of a running a secure data center, which meant offering redundant diesel generators, reliable bandwidth, inbound power and multiple power feeds.  The Bozzuto Group’s IT team analyzed numerous data centers in the greater Baltimore-Washington, D.C.-Northern Virginia corridor, and their service offerings, and found that Baltimore Technology Park met all of its criteria and more.

“BTP stood out because the infrastructure they’ve put in place is really first rate and they truly understand the business of data centers and what is important to customers,” said Rick Mostyn, COO, The Bozzuto Group.  “We chose BTP because the dedication of their team to supporting our success really shows.  Our success hinges on accessing our equipment and data 24/7, and they ensure that happens.  If there’s any failure of our systems at our headquarters, our clients, vendors and customers wouldn’t even notice because we’d operate as normal with our infrastructure collocated at BTP.  We’ve never had such an issue, but we want to be prudent about mitigating the risk of downtime.”

“We are thrilled to welcome to our data center an organization with the stellar reputation and footprint in Maryland like The Bozzuto Group,” said Jim Weller, president of BTP and a 20-year veteran of the IT infrastructure industry.  “More businesses outside of health care, financial services and retail are realizing that uptime of their IT infrastructure is critical to their business operations and are relying on companies like BTP to prevent any disruptions.”

Given its expertise and experience in the construction industry, it would seem logical that The Bozzuto Group might consider building its own data center.  When it began to outgrow its in-house data center, The Bozzuto Group did assess the cost of adding the infrastructure and human capital required to build and maintain a larger and more sophisticated data center.  “We just didn’t want to get into running a disaster recovery and data center business on our own,” explains Mostyn.  “We decided it would be easier and safer overall to move our equipment into a site where we had confidence and tap BTP’s expertise to manage all the pieces for us.”

Organizations in the greater Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia area turn to BTP to satisfy their data center needs for redundant power and cooling, physical security, and bandwidth. Often driven by legislative directives such as Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA and others, organizations also choose BTP to protect their critical IT systems from natural disasters, terrorist threats and unpredictable service from utility and bandwidth providers.  The data center’s convenient downtown location in a Focus Area of an Enterprise Zone of the City of Baltimore allows BTP to offer customers significant tax incentives, including a ten-year, 80% credit against local personal property taxes.
