Two More Maryland Firms Tap Baltimore Technology Park to Safeguard Their Critical IT Systems
Expanding Certification Firm and Center for Physics to Colocate at Growing Regional FacilityBALTIMORE, MD – Baltimore Technology Park (BTP), a premier data center and the largest carrier-neutral facility in the state of Maryland, today announced that two more area companies have entrusted it to protect their key business systems. The American Center for Physics (ACP), the unifying force for the physics community, and OnGuard Career Protection Services, which guards the rights of licensed professionals and protects their licenses and distinctions against unwarranted complaints, are both housing their core IT infrastructure at BTP.
Based in Columbia, Maryland, OnGuard Career Protection Services (formerly Savemylicense.com), are experts in the intricacies of state review boards and regulatory proceedings and work to support licensed professionals before and after their licenses or distinctions come under attack. Members include the National Association of Certified Home Inspectors (NACHI) and the Alliance of Cardiovascular Professionals (ACVP), as well as real estate agents, investment professionals, physicians, attorneys, teachers, mortgage brokers and others.
“We employ a web-based business model, so uptime is extremely important to us,” said Chris Fisher, Vice President of OnGuard Direct. “We outgrew our in-house data center, so from the perspectives of cost, future scalability and the security of having our equipment off-site, it makes sense for us to colocate. We think it’s important for our growth to align ourselves with a reputable, secure data center. We initially looked outside of Baltimore and found little available. We’re very happy with the service we’re getting from BTP.” An AMS Surety Holdings Corporation company, OnGuard Career Protection Services expects to continue its steady growth and anticipates supporting between 50,000 to 75,000 members by the end of 2008.
Headquartered in College Park, Maryland, the American Center for Physics (ACP) brings together the American Institute of Physics, American Physical Society, American Association of Physics Teachers, and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, all under one roof. The Center provides a focal point for the physics community, increases the community's interactions with government decision-makers, and serves as a resource for scientists, educators and the public.
“We were relatively unaware of data center options in Baltimore, so we instinctively looked to northern Virginia for space originally,” said Jeffrey Kobilinsky, Director of Telecommunications and Information Services for the ACP. “After doing some due diligence we found that BTP offered the most affordable rates and palatable commute possible for our staff.” The ACP also chose to colocate its IT systems at BTP as part of its Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity strategy.
“Baltimore Technology Park continues to experience strong demand, both regionally and nationally, for data center space that is built on modern power designs,” said Jim Weller, president of BTP and a 20-year veteran of the IT infrastructure industry. “These wins are a positive sign for the data center market in Baltimore overall as they signify that businesses are now re-evaluating and re-emphasizing the importance of security and uptime of their IT infrastructure and applications.”
Organizations in the greater Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia area turn to BTP to satisfy their data center needs for ample and redundant power and cooling, physical security, and bandwidth. Often driven by legislative directives such as Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA and others, organizations also choose BTP to protect their critical IT systems from natural disasters, terrorist threats and unpredictable service from utility and bandwidth providers. The data center’s convenient downtown location in a Focus Area of an Enterprise Zone of the City of Baltimore allows BTP to offer customers significant tax incentives, including a ten-year, 80% credit against local personal property taxes.

The American Center for Physics (ACP) is a unifying force for the field of physics and the many programs of physics societies. In addition to the many societies housed within the facility, the ACP is home to the Niels Bohr Library, one of the country's largest collections of material on the history of physics. The library contains some 1,000 transcribed and indexed interviews with physicists such as Niels Bohr, S. Chandrasekar, Richard Feynman, and Robert Oppenheimer, while the library's Emilio Segre Visual Archives includes over 20,000 physics related photographs. To contact the ACP, please visit www.acp.org
