Data Center Expands Further, Marks One Year of Protecting the Core Infrastructure of Area Businesses
Baltimore Technology Park Meeting Regional Demand for Secure, Affordable and Scalable Data Center ServicesBALTIMORE, MD – Baltimore Technology Park (BTP), a premier data center and the largest carrier-neutral facility in the state of Maryland, today highlighted some of the key milestones of its first 12 months in business, and announced a further build-out of its space. During the past year, BTP’s state-of-the-art data center has expanded its customer base to include a variety of businesses, from streaming audio and video providers to developers of software for the training industry. Other key developments include two build-outs of existing space to accommodate more customers. The second project, currently underway, has been expanded from 11,000 square feet to 15,000 to meet strong market demand. The build-out will result in space for 250 more server cabinets as well as cages and suites. An extra one million dollars has been added to the construction budget for a total investment of $4 million. The build-outs will increase BTP’s capacity, augment its bandwidth and security, and double its power supply.
Additional BTP achievements include the creation of a Systems Integrator Advisory Board and acceptance into the Association of Contingency Planners (ACP) Central Maryland Chapter, the premier international organization for Business Continuity professionals. Market demand and the opportunity to guide BTP attracted Jim Weller, a 20-year veteran of the data infrastructure and data center industry, who was named president last November. “It is rewarding to see a true need in the Baltimore-area market and to successfully actuate a plan to meet demand,” said Weller. “We will continue to respond to the regional shortage of affordable and scalable space at data centers that have the modern power design necessary to cool, power and protect the servers used by most businesses.” Weller has been involved in the design, operation, upgrade, site selection and acquisitions of more than 50 centers nationwide, and is an original member of Switch and Data’s executive team.
Baltimore Technology Park recently began the $4 million build-out of its current space. Of this, 8,500 square feet will consist of raised flooring available for colocation. The remaining 6,500 square feet will be designed for employee and client workspace, kitchen, break and conference rooms.
Organizations in the greater Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia area turn to BTP to satisfy their data center needs for ample and redundant power, sufficient cooling, security, and bandwidth, often driven by legislative directives such as Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA and others. Organizations also choose BTP to protect their critical IT systems from natural disasters, terrorist threats and unpredictable service from utility and bandwidth providers. The data center’s location in a Focus Area of an Enterprise Zone of the City of Baltimore allows BTP to offer customers significant tax incentives, including a ten-year, 80% credit against local personal property taxes. And, BTP’s convenient location in downtown Baltimore is another plus for clients.
